2560 Knitting Boot Camp

Kick your knitting up a notch! Joan will lead you through knitting from beginning to end. Each session focuses on different swatches and builds a reference portfolio. For this class to be successful for you, you must have time to devote to the class work and be fairly comfortable with knitting. Please refer to our class progression recommendations on the website and in the shop for more details -- we want you to get the most from this learning experience.

Required supplies and equipment: Three skeins untextured worsted weight wool yarn at least 200 yards each (two in white or cream and the other in a light color) such as Shepherd's Wool. Optional, different color of same yarn for making Teddy Bear Sweater - approx. 150 yards. Please no acrylics. NOTE: Some people find they need more yarn later in the class. US size 5 (3.75mm) and 7 (4.5mm) 8-inch double point needles (you may want two sets of the size 7s). Three small stitch holders. Tapestry needle (Chibi bent tip recommended). Scissors, seaming pins, calculator, crochet hook: US size E, pencil, highlighter, small amount wool roving or fiber fill, 2 yards smooth cotton yarn, split ring and locking stitch markers, ruler and tape measure, and a 3-inch loose leaf notebook with sheet protectors.

Required Books: Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book - and - Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques, Nancy Wiseman

Prerequisite: Intermediate level knitter, must have recently completed a project; sweater, felted bags, socks, mittens, etc.

Pre-Class Prep: Handout Knit four swatches using US size 7 needles and white or cream colored yarn. Use the cast on and bind off techniques you normally use. Label as described, weave in all ends. Block swatches 1, 2 and 3.

  • Gauge Swatch 1: Stockinette stitch. 28 sts by 5".
  • Gauge Swatch 2: Garter Stitch. 28 sts by 5".
  • Gauge Swatch 3: Seed Stitch. Row 1: (k1,p1); Row 2: (p1,k1). 28 sts by 5".
  • Gauge Swatch 4: 2 x 2 rib. 40 sts by 5".
Bring all swatches to the first class. Also, make sure that all yarn is wound into balls.
