General KnittingWhere a Knitting Kit is mentioned, you should bring the following items: Must have: various sizes crochet hooks (based on yarn you are working with), ruler, scissors, pencil, large and small tapestry (blunt or darning) needles (we prefer bent-tip needles). Nice to have: point protectors (if you use them), sticky notes, cable needle, row counter, stitch markers (including locking stitch markers), calculator, stitch holders, needle gauge, tape measure.
3571 Focus on LaceDates: Saturday, 9/26/2009, 10/24/2009, 11/21/2009, 1/9, 1/30 and 2/27, 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, 6 sessions Lace is elegant, timeless, intricate and not as difficult as you'd think (really!). This class, presented in "boot camp" style, exposes you to many different lace patterns, chart reading and writing, garment construction and design and lace history. Expect a significant amount of homework. All "Focus on" classes culminate with a full-sized knitted garment (it's our reward after all those swatches). Learn exactly what ease means, how different styles suit different body types, what size is YOUR size, how to substitute yarns, how to change the gauge, how bust and waist shaping can make a big difference, and how to fix simple fit issues without having to rip out or start over. Required supplies and equipment: Sweater pattern of choice (not required at start of class). Approx 200 yds of worsted weight yarn, US 7 (4.5mm) needles, note pad, tape measure, calculator, yarn for chosen sweater pattern (not required at start of class). Knit up a Fair Isle knitted sweater using only 2 colors at a time. Required supplies and equipment: A Philosopher's Sweater kit, Fair Isle Sweater Simplified Book by Ann and Eugene Bourgeois. 3 circular needles in sizes: 16" US8, 24" US8, and a 24" US4. 2704 The Next Step; Toe Up SocksDates: Tuesdays, 2/9, 2/16 and 2/23, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, 3 sessions Learn to knit a traditional style sock from the "Toe Up" so you always have the right amount of yarn and you know they will fit because you can try them on as you go. The pattern is ideal for spinners as well because you can knit with almost any gauge for almost any size. Lots of good sock knitting tips thrown in! With a classic flat toe and flap heel it looks just like the traditional top-down sock. Required supplies and equipment: 100 g of worsted weight or DK weight yarn (preferred). Two circular needles (or one long circular) in size to give a snug gauge. You can pick out your yarn at needles at the first class. A basic knitting kit and note taking tools. Required Books: None Prerequisite: Must have taken "Learn to Knit Toe-Up Socks" or have finished at least one pair of socks first.
0404 Understanding Yarn and FibersDates: Friday, 2/12, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm, 1 sessions Have you struggled with trying to match a yarn to a project? This class will give you hands-on experience in making a fiber selection. We'll look at the properties of all of the common fibers and you will receive a knittable (or weavable on a Weavette) sample of many. In addition, we'll talk about fiber blends - what works and what doesn't, weights of yarn according to various systems, and spinning and plying styles. Not just a lecture - you will have a piece of yarn in your hands that you can look at and feel as its properties are discussed. Required supplies and equipment: Bring all your knitting needles. If you do not knit, bring a small Weavette or prewarped rigid heddle with a narrow warp set at 10 or 12 epi with fingering weight wool or cotton. Required Books: None Prerequisite: None

2541 Learn Fair Isle KnittingDates: Sunday, 2/28, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, 1 sessions Learn how to knit in the Fair Isle style using two colors at the same time in a row. You'll try different methods of tensioning the yarns to decide what is best for you. We'll discuss a bit about the Fair Isle history and examine how color changes a pattern. Required supplies and equipment: My First Fair Isle Hat pattern, plus yarn and needles as stated in pattern. If you choose to select your own colors, please pick one color that you like for the background color prior to class so you can do the homework. We'll select the other colors in class together. This series of classes introduces the basics via swatching and knitting a hat that places the techniques learned in a practical application Required supplies and equipment: Bring 10" long non-metal single point needles size 7 or 8, one skein smooth, light colored worsted wool yarn for practice, and a loose leaf notebook to begin your knitting records. 3708 Toe Up, Two at a Time - SocksDates: Tuesdays, 3/16, 3/30, 4/6 and 4/13, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, 4 sessions First class 6:00 to 9:00 pm, remaining courses 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Take your sock knitting to the next level! You will learn to knit socks from the "Toe Up" so you always have just the right amount of yarn. Plus, knit them on one long, circular needle and work both socks at the same time. When you are done, you are done. Knit from Deb's "any gauge, any size" sock pattern with lots of great sock knitting hints thrown in. Pattern utilizes a standard flat-toe and a heel-flap style heel. Your friends will be amazed and you'll escape the single-sock-syndrome! Not for the faint-hearted. Must have knit socks before. Required supplies and equipment: Standard knitting tool kit.* 100 grams of yarn in sock, DK, or worsted weight. One 40" or 47" circular needle in a size appropriate for your weight yarn & determined by your gauge swatch. One set of double point needles in the same size. 3567 Focus on Fair IsleDates: Sundays, 3/21, 3/28, 4/18, 5/2 and 5/16, 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, 6 sessions First Class Begins at 9 a.m. Required supplies and equipment: Size 3 double point needles (for the first class), 3 ring binder with sheet protectors for holding class notes and samples, tags for marking swatches (large ones, there is a lot to write) scissors, calculator, 8x8 graph paper, and standard knitting supplies. During class you will also need 16" circular needle with matching double points for knitting the hat, 5 skeins to 10 skeins of yarn for your hat, plus needles and yarn for sweater. Required Books: Art of Fair Isle Knitting, Feitelson and Traditional Fair Isle Knitting, Sheila McGregor Prerequisite: An intermediate level. You understand basic concepts and can make independent decisions in your work based on your experience.
