General KnittingWhere a Knitting Kit is mentioned, you should bring the following items: Must have: various sizes crochet hooks (based on yarn you are working with), ruler, scissors, pencil, large and small tapestry (blunt or darning) needles (we prefer bent-tip needles). Nice to have: point protectors (if you use them), sticky notes, cable needle, row counter, stitch markers (including locking stitch markers), calculator, stitch holders, needle gauge, tape measure.

1528 Fish Sweater, TheDates: Saturdays, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23 and 10/30, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, 4 sessions The Fish Sweater will prepare knitters to knit in the round with ease. They'll learn to join stitches, do garter and stockinette in the round, rib, increase, decrease, make a button placket, four types of bind off and then do an afterthought pocket and the Kitchener stitch. Required supplies and equipment: 16-inch circular needle in size 8; double pointed needles same size. Stitch markers. Light colored worsted weight yarn and small amount contrasting color yarn. Required Books: The Sweater Workshop, Jacqueline Fee Prerequisite: Must have had a beginning knitting class and know how to knit, purl & cable cast-on. 1822 Applied Lace Guest Towel - Part 1 - WeavingDates: Saturday and Sunday, 2/26/2011 and 2/27/2011, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, 2 sessions Saturday meets from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Warp a simple linen project in class and weave a pair of guest towels based on historical textile samples. Must have your own loom - either a multi-shaft loom or a rigid heddle with second heddle (2 - 12 dent reeds). Required supplies and equipment: 1 8.8 oz tube 20/2 linen (note: if you are taking part 2 of this class you will want matching linen in the 10/2 weight) Required Books: None Prerequisite: None
2541 Introduction to Fair IsleDates: Sunday, 9/26, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, 1 sessions This one day class will expose you to the colors of Shetland and teach you several different ways to perform stranded knitting. Once you figure out "your" way, you'll begin work on a hat based on colors you select. You'll also learn a bit about the knitting tradition of Shetland via a video presentation. Required supplies and equipment: Select a color of Jamieson's Spindrift Shetland yarn to be your main color. US size 1 and size 3 16" circulars and US size 3 dpn. "My First Fair Isle Hat" pattern. Scissors, stitch markers, tapestry needle and standard knit kit. Yarn for class exercises included in class fee. Once you have determined (in class) which colors you'd like to use, you will need to purchase 6 colors of yarn in addition to the main color. Required Books: None Prerequisite: None Pre-Class Prep: CO 176 stitches using main color, join in the round without twisting and work 10 rounds of 2/2 rib using smaller needles. Leave on needles to prepare for stranded knitting.

Joan will lead you through knitting from beginning to end. Each session focuses on different swatches and builds a reference portfolio. For this class to be successful for you, you must have time to devote to the class work and be fairly comfortable with knitting. Required supplies and equipment: Three skeins untextured worsted weight wool yarn at least 200 yards each (two in white or cream and the other in a light color) such as Shepherd's Wool. Optional, different color of same yarn for making Teddy Bear Sweater - approx. 150 yards. Please no acrylics. NOTE: Some people find they need more yarn later in the class. US size 5 (3.75mm) and 7 (4.5mm) 8-inch double point needles (you may want two sets of the size 7s). Three small stitch holders. Tapestry needle (Chibi bent tip recommended). 3506 Mini Latvian MittensDates: Sunday, 11/14, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, 1 sessions A tiny project packed with technique! Learn a bit about the Latvian knitting tradition and make mini mittens suitable for decorating a package, tree, lapel, or even for framing. They are that cool! We'll practice casting on and two different knitted beginnings that you can use on other projects. Class fee includes yarn. Required supplies and equipment: Size 0, 1, or 2 double point 5" or 6" needles (how low will you go?!). Learn exactly what ease means, how different styles suit different body types, what size is YOUR size, how to substitute yarns, how to change the gauge, how bust and waist shaping can make a big difference, and how to fix simple fit issues without having to rip out or start over. Required supplies and equipment: Sweater pattern of choice (not required at start of class). Approx 200 yds of worsted weight yarn, US 7 (4.5mm) needles, note pad, tape measure, calculator, yarn for chosen sweater pattern (not required at start of class). 3516 Applied Lace Guest Towel - Part 2 KnittingDates: Sunday, 3/27/2011, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, 1 sessions Learn to knit a vintage lace trim for a linen guest towel - either one you wove in last months companion class, or for a purchased towel. We\'ll work from old patterns and do a bit of sampling. This is fine gauge work! Required supplies and equipment: Linen knitting yarn included in class fee. Bring your smallest knitting needles - from US Size 000 to Size 1. Note taking materials and standard knitting kit. Let us know before class if you will need linen for a towel. 3567 Focus on Fair IsleDates: Saturdays, 10/2, 11/6, 12/4, 1/8/2011, 2/5/2011 and 5/7/2011, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, 6 sessions Explore the history and techniques of Fair Isle knitting. Learn stranded knitting, how to work with yarn in each hand, modify patterns, steek (cut your knitting), design your own pattern, and what a difference color placement makes. During class you'll knit a hat and begin work on a sweater (from a pattern of your own design or a published pattern). Required supplies and equipment: Size 3 double point needles (for the first class), 3 ring binder with sheet protectors for holding class notes and samples, tags for marking swatches (large ones, there is a lot to write) scissors, calculator, 8x8 graph paper, and standard knitting supplies. During class you will also need 16" circular needle with matching double points for knitting the hat, 5 skeins to 10 skeins of yarn for your hat, plus needles and yarn for sweater. Required Books: Art of Fair Isle Knitting, Feitelson; Traditional Fair Isle Knitting, Sheila McGregor; and The Book of Fair Isle Knitting, Alice Starmore Prerequisite: An intermediate level. 4501 Fiber ExplorersDates: Saturday, 10/2, 11/6, 12/4, 1/8/2011 and 2/12/2011, 9:00 am to 11:30 am, 5 sessions This is a multi-media fiber class that will give you "assignments" that need to be completed every month using a single or combined techniques that may include: crochet, weaving, tatting, needlepoint, embroidery, knitting, spinning, quilting, etc. You will be limited only by your imagination as to what you might create. Each class will begin with a short talk about the assignment and may include a slide or video presentation. This is not a how-to class. Think of it as brain play for fiber lovers. Required supplies and equipment: Composition book so you have a place to record ideas - find one with graph paper inside if possible. Erasable colored pencils. Lots of other stuff that you already have at home! Required Books: None Prerequisite: None Pre-Class Prep: Bring the most creative thing you've ever made with fiber to class for show and tell. |
